Dashboard and Scorecard products are powerful tools in the right situation. To understand their use, some easy 'rules of thumb' exist:

• Dashboards give a measure of business health and are linked to the visualisation of key performance indicators.
• Scorecards are a management tool used to communicate and monitor corporate strategic objectives and vision, across the organisation, ensuring that all parts of the organisation are aligned around common objectives.

In a practical sense, a manager would use a Dashboard to look at the past and the present and ask questions about why a particular objective was missed. A Scorecard, by contrast, looks at the future and future objectives, allowing a manager to ask how an individual target aligns to the corporate strategy.
